Can you buy replacement ones that don't cost an arm and a leg at retail stores? Maybe a generic one? About how much do they cost?

try looking on ebay...I enjoy book a couple there for assorted notebooks. You can find a targus one in departments stores run approx. $90

Best Buy or Circuit City usually carries them. Targus make them. They make them within different wattages, and have different power tips as powerfully.
If you have a Mac though, later you are stuck going to the Apple store, ordering it online from apple.com, or eBay.
