My laptop will not boot?

So yesterday darkness I was on the computer and it be a little slow but it be still fine. This morning, I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't even let me click on my user identify on the welcome page. I unplugged the computer and tried again. It consent to me click on my username but got stuck on the loading your settings subdivision of the welcome page. I tried again and disappeared the room for about an hour and when i come back it have finally reached the the regular peak with my wallpaper but no icon would come up it is an HP and ive had it for just about three years what could be wrong with it?
